Obesity during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Obesity in the first months of pregnancy is linked to an increased risk of miscarriage, a study suggests.

The researchers noted that proper weight before and during pregnancy is a must to avoid the risk of child mortality and other complications.

In a survey of 18481 women at Primigraveda University in the United States, obesity in early pregnancy was associated with higher risk of spontaneous abortion and preterm delivery.

She noted that underweight during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of premature neonatal mortality, as well as low birth weight.

"Pregnant women and prenatal caregivers may want to evaluate these results to reduce related risks," said Dr. Jian Ming Liu, lead author of the study, published in the journal Obesity."He said.
