Egypt raises the voice of the continent .. A panel discussion on the problem of stalemate in Washington
The Egyptian Embassy in the United States, with the participation of the African Group in Washington, organized a panel discussion on the issue of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons in African countries, hosted by the American Institute of Peace, one of the most important think tanks in the United States. .
More than 200 participants took part in the panel discussion, including a number of officials from the US administration, Congress and African ambassadors, and a group of researchers, academics and those interested in African affairs in Washington.
Ambassador Yasser Reda, Ambassador of Egypt to the United States, said that the initiative of the Embassy to organize this important seminar at the American Institute of Peace came in coordination with the African Group in Washington and in celebration of Africa Day. Stressing that the event highlighted the importance of the issue of refugees in the continent to the American decision-making circles.
Ambassador Karen Bass, a member of the Congress of California and chairman of the Subcommittee on African Affairs in the House of Representatives, was one of the most prominent speakers in the seminar. She stressed the strength of US relations with the countries of the continent. She also talked about the challenges faced by African countries in dealing with the refugee problem. And internally displaced persons, whether due to conflicts or natural disasters.
The head of the subcommittee on African affairs in the US House of Representatives warned that terrorism plays a role in exacerbating the phenomenon of refugees and internally displaced persons, stressing the importance of supporting the African Union and its countries in facing these challenges. The consequences of hosting refugees are usually exhausting for host countries. And violence, so it is necessary to support the countries of the continent to deal with the roots and causes of this phenomenon.
Carol O'Connell, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Refugees, said that the African continent currently has 7 million refugees and 27 million internally displaced persons, noting the generous treatment of refugees in a number of African countries, despite the lack of resources and resources. The US commitment to positive engagement on the continent has also been confirmed as the United States is the largest humanitarian support provider in Africa and the world. Its humanitarian assistance to the continent in 2018 reached about 3.8 billion dollars. The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State stressed the continued US support for United Nations organizations and non-governmental organizations to reduce and deal with the phenomenon of refugees and internally displaced persons.
The seminar was attended by UNHCR's Goodwill Ambassador, Jere Duane, and Matthew Reynolds, Regional Director of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR], who praised UNHCR's efforts in coordination with various countries and international organizations to address the refugee issue. The seminar also witnessed the speeches of a number of African ambassadors, who explained the efforts and policies of their countries to deal with this phenomenon.
