The Arab Water Council, in cooperation with the Center for Environment and Development of the Arab Region and Europe, Cedari and the Egyptian Water Partnership, will launch the third report of the Water Situation Series in the Arab Region on Saturday as part of the celebration of World Water Day 2019. The report includes an assessment of the water situation in the Arab countries through several indicators, "more than 15 sets of indicators, including water needs, economic and social dimensions, indicators of follow-up achievement in the goals of sustainable development and the 2030 agenda, especially the sixth target, including water and sanitation services suitable for all". Policy and decision-making, and in the preparation of important investment projects and new policies for the development of the water sector.
The report examines the water situation at 22 Arab countries, highlighting their water needs and uses. A range of well-defined indicators have been covered, covering topics such as available water, water use, land use change, population and energy, health, climate, Economics and foreign policy.
The report shows the relationship of water to political and environmental affairs through the shared water resources, where there are 12 Arab countries dependent on external water resources, which requires the need to build political relations between those countries and other riparian countries in their basins.
It is noteworthy that the second report of the water situation in the Arab region prepared by the Arab Water Council in cooperation with the Center for Environment and Development "Cedari" explained that the secession of Sudan to two countries in 2010 was one of the most important political developments that directly affected the total water resources in the Arab region where lost The region has about 732 billion cubic meters of water. The total annual average rainfall is 1.092 billion cubic meters. The average annual rainfall depth in the Arab region is 229 mm, while the total rain volume is 1.384 billion cubic meters..
The report pointed out that the Arab region in 2012 imported 274 billion cubic meters of virtual water – in the form of 87 million tons of food – while exporting 55 billion cubic meters only, representing 19 million tons of food, and in the same year was produced "Food" used about 282 billion cubic meters.
It is worth mentioning that the Arab Water Council, in cooperation with the Center for Environment and Development of the Arab Region and Europe, Cedari, is preparing a series of reports on the Arab water situation aimed at providing a platform for the promotion of development and assessment of water resources in the Arab region.
