The Middle East leads the growth of world tourism in the first quarter of 2019

International tourism continued to grow during the first quarter of 2019, according to figures from the World Tourism Organization. From January to March 2019, the increase was 4%.

"The growth rate is slower than last year 2018, at 6 percent for the same period last year," said Dr. Said Al-Batouti, economic adviser to the World Tourism Organization for the seventh day. And the details of the movement of tourism during the first three months:

  • The Middle East region has the highest growth rate with 8% growth followed by Asia and the Pacific with 6% growth, Europe and Africa with growth of 4% and the Americas with growth of 3%.

  • The European region, which accounts for about 50% of the volume of global tourism, recorded a strong growth of 4%, led by its tourist destinations in Central Europe and Central and Eastern Europe where both grew by 5% compared to the same period last year.

  • In the Africa region, which had a growth rate of 4%, which was driven by the continuous recovery in North Africa, which grew to 11% compared to the same period last year.

  • In the Americas region, the Caribbean region rebounded strongly with a 17% growth over the same period last year.

  • In the Asia-Pacific region, the results of the first three months showed a 6% increase led by Northeast Asia with a growth rate of 9% and very strong performance for the Chinese market.
