Study: Egyptians smoked 83 billion cigarettes at a cost of 73 billion pounds in two years

On the occasion of the International Day for Quitting Smoking, 31 May, statistics from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics [CAPMAS] revealed that the proportion of smokers in Egypt is 21% of the total population, 23% of them are passive smokers and 171,000 die each year for smoking related diseases.
The daily consumption of regular cigarettes is about 16 cigarettes per capita. According to figures issued by the Cairo Center for Economic and Strategic Studies, Egyptian consumption of cigarettes during the year 2017-2018 amounted to 83 billion cigarettes, estimated at 73 billion pounds, while consumption of "molasses" used in shisha reached 50 thousand tons per year, worth 3 billion pounds.
The study, conducted by the Central Agency for Mobilization and Statistics, revealed that more than half of males 52% in both age groups 30 to 44 years and 45 to 59 years of smokers, while this percentage was less than 1% among females.
The study showed that 33.5% of people in the 30 to 44 age group were exposed to tobacco smoke in the workplace, "47.5% of males and 18.7% of females".
The study found that 21.4 percent of secondary school girls smoke, while about 6.9 percent of girls smoke in secondary schools.
