The child was treated at the central hospital of Shenyang Medical College in northeast China's Liaoning Province, and doctors promised that the procedure would not affect the baby's growth and would maintain the function and aesthetics of her hands.

"The girl had two extra fingers on each hand, a very rare disease, and the operation was complicated by the lack of knowledge of the basic fingers from the extra fingers to be removed," said hand surgery specialist Dr. Zan Ji, who performed the operation.

In addition to removing the additional fingers, the paramedics also returned the thumb to position it and guide bone growth with the help of metal rods. A month has passed since the operation and it returned two weeks later to remove its surgical thread.

"We and the patient's family are satisfied with the appearance of her hands. Dr. Zan did not say whether the girl will need future follow-up surgery to make minor corrections," he said.

Statistics show that multiple effects affect one in every 700 to 1,000 babies worldwide, and are usually taken during ultrasound screening.

Additional fingers for patients in developed countries are usually removed surgically when they are two years old, according to the Boston Children's Hospital.
