New traffic lights turn green automatically according to pedestrian intent in crossing the road

Often, a green light does not wait for the traffic lights to safely cross the road, potentially endangering their lives, as well as disturbing motorists, as most of them have to slow down or stop altogether until citizens cross the road without danger.

To solve this problem, researchers in Vienna from the TU Graz Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision developed a smart signaling system that could replace the traditional system. The project aims to identify the intention of pedestrians to cross the road and turn green automatically.

The technology not only recognizes pedestrian intent but also improves traffic flows. "The program can extend the green phase in the traffic signal if large groups of people cross because they need more time to cross," said Horst Busiger, an innovator.

The work of innovation depends on the placement of a camera installed on each pedestrian signal that can shoot people between 5 to 8 meters to identify anyone who wants to cross the street in seconds, requiring one second to estimate the intention and two seconds later the estimate becomes reliable.
