Low humidity increases chances of getting flu

Health and Medical

A study found that low humidity reduces the defenses of the immune system against infection with influenza.

In the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), The researchers used transgenic mice to resist the infection. The rats were housed in rooms at the same temperature but with low or normal humidity. Then they were exposed to the influenza A virus. They found that low humidity inhibited the immune response of the animals.

Dr. Akiko Iwasaki, a professor at Yale University in the United States, known that when the humidity decreases, there is an increase in cases of influenza and its deaths.

Increasing water vapor in the air with moisturizers at home, school, work, and even in hospital settings is a potential strategy to reduce influenza symptoms and accelerate healing, researchers said.
