I'tikaaf is mustahabb when it is obligatory

Egyptian reports

The house of Ifta 'in Egypt confirmed that i'tikaaf is mustahabb in sharee'ah, and it is not obligatory except for a vow, and it is not necessary to start it except in the case of the Maalikis.

On the official website of the social networking site Facebook, the Egyptian Dar al-Ifta said that the Sunnah is to observe the last ten days of Ramadaan. The Sunnah of the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] is the lowest known for the i'tikaaf. The mosque may intend to observe i'tikaaf regardless of his stay in it so that he may receive his reward. A Muslim may observe a month if he wants to, provided that he does not lose his religious or mundane duties.
