The American Academy of Dermatology [AAD] has confirmed that 80 million men and women in the United States suffer from hair loss, which can affect only the hair of the scalp and may reach the entire body, according to the site, "Kids Health."
It is normal for a person to lose between 50 and 100 hair a day. This small loss is not noticeable because the new hair usually replaces the missing but this does not always happen. Hair loss can occur gradually over the years or suddenly.
Causes of hair loss
The most common cause of hair loss is male or female genetic baldness. Some sex hormones can also lead to hair loss, which begins early after reaching puberty.

Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth and discontinuation of contraceptive pills and menopause can cause temporary hair loss.
Medical conditions that can cause hair loss include thyroid disease, alopecia, and scalp infections.
Hair loss can also be due to medications used to treat cancer, high blood pressure, arthritis, depression and heart problems.
Physical or emotional trauma may lead to hair loss significantly from examples of this kind of trauma to death in the family or severe weight loss or high temperature.
A diet lacking protein, iron and other nutrients can lead to hair thinning.
