A recent study reveals the footprints of people who explored a dark cave 14,000 years ago

A recent study on the footprints of a group of five "barefoot" people – two adults, a young man and two children – walked through a passageway in an Italian cave about 14,000 years ago.

The researchers said they could see their well-preserved footprints well, according to Life Science.

Marco Romano, a researcher at the Institute of Evolutionary Studies at the University of Witwatersrand, said the ceiling of the cave was so low that the old explorers were forced to crawl in some parts of the cave.

"They walked near the side wall of the cave, a safer approach that other animals" like dogs and bears "use when moving in a poorly lit and unknown environment, Marco Romano said.

Marco Romano added that shortly after, the roof of the cave was reduced to less than 31 inches (80 cm), forcing the adventurers to crawl, putting their hands and knees on the bottom layer of clay.

Matthew Bennett, a professor of environmental and geographic sciences at Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom, said the discovery did not add much to the scientific understanding of the Late Stone Age people, but suggested a group of individuals were exploring a magnificent cave.
