Playing in nature during childhood improves mental health in adulthood
A new scientific study by the Barcelona Institute for World Health has revealed(ISGlobal) , That adults who were in close contact with natural spaces during their childhood may have better mental health than those with less contact.
Exposure to outdoor natural environments has been associated with many health benefits, including improved cognitive development, better mental health and better physical health, according to the Daily Mail website.
However, a few studies have explored the impact of childhood exposure to natural environments on mental health and vitality in adulthood.
To confirm the results, the researchers analyzed data from more than 3,600 adults from Barcelona (Spain), the Netherlands, Lithuania and the UK.
Adult participants responded to a questionnaire on exposure to natural spaces during childhood, including targeted visits, for example long walks in nature parks and non-target activities, for example playing in the back yard.
The mental health of the participants in terms of nervousness and feelings of depression in the past four weeks, as well as the vitality, defined as levels of energy and fatigue, was assessed by psychological testing.
The results showed that adults who were less exposed to normal areas during their childhood had lower scores on mental health tests than those who were exposed to green spaces more.
Dr. Wilma Zelima, a researcher and coordinator of the study inISGlobal , The findings show the importance of children's exposure to natural areas for the development of health psychosis in adulthood.
