National Meeting for Women, Childhood and Motherhood on female genital mutilation

Head of the National Council for Women and Dr. Azza Al-Ashmawi, Secretary-General of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, chaired the first meeting of the National Team for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation [FGM], which was co-chaired by the two councils. Representatives of relevant ministries, representatives of international partners and representatives of civil society organizations.
Dr. Maya Morsi expressed her happiness and pride in her presence today in the first meeting of the national team, amid an important group of partners. She paid tribute to Ambassador Moushira Khattab for her efforts in this important issue during her tenure as Secretary General of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood. She added that the Egyptian government has exerted many efforts in this issue, pointing out that the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030 prepared by the Council and approved by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi as the government work document for the coming years, pointing out that it is consistent with the vision of Egypt 2030, And the National Council for Women to follow up the implementation of the strategy, explaining that the strategy includes a special focus of protection, which includes the issue of combating FGM.
The President of the Council also called for coordination with all partners, documenting all the great efforts made over previous years, as well as success stories and lessons learned, asking each representative in the Working Group to document her efforts from the beginning to date to prepare a comprehensive report on national efforts. Dr. Maya Morsi stressed that the first task of the working group should be to set a time plan for moving on the ground and raising awareness of the issue with the support of all parties.
She stressed the importance of the role of the media in raising awareness of the issue and the efforts exerted, stressing that the society is getting its information from the media, hence the importance of unifying the message of the national team in all media and on the ground.
Dr. Maya Morsi concluded by extending her thanks and appreciation to all partners from the beginning to eradicate this phenomenon and their willingness to complete the process of cooperation and support to eliminate the phenomenon.
In her speech, Dr. Azza Al-Ashmawi stressed that this meeting is the first of the working group on combating female circumcision. The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood is honored to lead the team with the National Council for Women, stressing that it is necessary to work together to end this crime which not only violates the rights of the girl child.
Al-Ashmawi thanked Dr. Maya Morsi, President of the National Council of Women, for her continuous efforts to combat all forms of violence against women and the empowerment of women in Egypt, as well as her continued support for the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood.
The aim of the meeting is to form a national team to eradicate FGM, which will be effective by defining responsibilities and tasks to join efforts to eradicate this crime, which is an explicit violation of the Constitution of Egypt, the Children's Law and the international and regional conventions ratified by Egypt and the most important The International Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
Al-Ashmawi stressed that the work of this team is in line with the goals of sustainable development, which it hopes to reach in 2030, and emphasizes that FGM / C impedes progress and is dedicated to discrimination against girls and perpetuates a vicious cycle of physical, psychological and social malaise.
The meeting ended with Dr. Azza Al-Ashmawy presenting the shield of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood to Dr. Maya Morsi for her tireless efforts to improve the situation of Egyptian women and support the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood from the beginning.
