A deceptive anti-abortion group focused on Google and getting $ 150,000
Google has given tens of thousands of dollars as free advertising to an anti-abortion group that publishes ads saying they offer abortion services in their medical clinics, but in fact seek to deter women considering abortion from ending their pregnancy.
According to the Guardian, the Obria group, which runs a network of clinics, received a $ 120,000 advertising grant from Google in 2015, according to a report published. The grants are designed to support and expand the reach of non-profit organizations worldwide .
But Google has come under intense criticism after an investigation revealed that the platform was displaying deceptive advertisements for clinics that appeared to offer abortions and other medical services, but instead focused on counseling and information as alternatives to abortion. Obria runs a network of clinics across the United States, Many of them suggest on their websites that they offer abortion.
For its part, Google said it allowed ads to be given to "a variety of different views and different reasons". Both groups offering abortions and those opposed to abortion were given grants.
Google has not commented on the Obria grant, but said all recipients must abide by its policies, while one of the policies prohibits advertising distortion, as well as ads that "intend to deceive users by excluding relevant information or providing misleading information about products, services or companies."
