A gang of 18 suspects has been arrested in the UK, selling fake train tickets worth about 18 million pounds sterling.

The gang members were arrested after a 12-month investigation after railway workers in Romania spotted fake tickets circulating last year and alerted the British transport police, according to the British Daily Mail.

The gang members are still in detention, charged with fraud, cybercrime and participation in a criminal organization.

Investigator Darren Bates, of the British Transport Police, said the investigation lasted for 12 months. They made fake tickets for rail trips in the United Kingdom.

Newspaper investigations have revealed that counterfeit rail tickets can be purchased through the Internet using virtual currencies, where fraudsters claim they offer a public service at a low cost in the face of ticket prices.

Travelers who bought counterfeit tickets are at risk of being accused of fraud, where they are fined or imprisoned for up to a year if they are caught.

Last year, more than 141 people were arrested at European airports after a series of counterfeit airline ticket sales over the Internet.
