Rwanda establishes new regional center for treating cancer patients in Africa

Rwanda recently opened a regional cancer treatment center to reduce the burden of the dreaded disease in East Africa and reduce the costs incurred by patients traveling abroad for diagnosis and treatment. The new center at the Rwanda Military Hospital is planned to receive cases from within and outside the African continent, From the situation of Rwanda in the treatment of cancer.

The World Health Organization [WHO] said in a statement that Kenya had the highest cancer mortality rate in Africa, with 33,000 deaths a year. Tanzania was second in terms of the number of deaths from cancer, 28 thousand deaths annually, followed by Uganda with 21 thousand deaths annually.

The Director General of the new center, Pacific Mogensi, said that the aim of the new center is to provide the necessary treatment for the cancer patient in full. He hoped that the center will be able to receive patients from neighboring countries and from outside the continent of Africa as well.

He pointed out that the Rwandan government decided to pay special insurance cards for patients who will undergo treatment in the new center to become accessible to all levels of the people. Pointing out that Rwanda is ranked first on the level of sub-Saharan Africa in the field of health care for citizens.

Cancer kills nearly 5,000 people in Rwanda each year, equivalent to 7 percent of the total death toll in Rwanda, according to the latest World Health Organization [WHO] report.
