Warning to parents .. Negative messages reduce the exam grades for high school students

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Parents' intimidation may be counterproductive for students when they take the final exams, according to a recent scientific study conducted by British researchers.

According to the site of the newspaper "Daily Mail" British, the study included 347 students, the average age of 15 years, in the UK who were in the program of study for 18 months.

Students received encouraging messages and negative messages from their teachers before the exam.

An example of a message of intimidation: "If you fail the exam, you will not be able to get a good job or go to college that needs to work hard."

Example of a message focused on success (encouraging): "The exam is really important as most jobs require effort and if you want to go to a distinguished college you will need to pass the exam with excellence.

The study showed that students 'motivation to do good work when they felt threatened by teachers' letters focused on failure, and the exam scores decreased because of the fear tactics they use.

The author of the study, David Bottwin, of Edge Hill University in Lancashire, England, said that teachers are not well aware of how best to motivate students to take exams and are not aware of how messages sent to students can be interpreted about the importance of good performance in exams.

"All the messages highlight the importance of effort and the reasons for seeking," he said. "These messages differ in focusing on the possibility of success, while others stress the need to avoid failure.
