Pope Tavadros today presides over the meetings of the Holy Synod with its new composition

Egyptian reports

Pope Twaedros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the Maronite prelate, will preside over Monday the opening session of the new Holy Synod, the supreme body of the Church, and meet twice a year at the end of May and November each year.

Pope Benedict XVI will inaugurate the first session tomorrow at the cathedral in the presence of 128 bishops, the first meeting of the Holy Synod in its new form, after Pope Twardos joined four new bishops on Sunday to serve in Egypt and abroad.

It is expected that the Assemblies of the Synod will be involved in preparatory meetings before the closing session, which the Pope will chair several days later. The committees will discuss the issue of controlling the Coptic calendar and recognizing some new monasteries.
