The state fights rumors and false news, which is resorted to by terrorist groups and criminal elements with the aim of disturbing security and public peace. The law has imposed penalties amounting to imprisonment and a fine to punish the accused in these cases.
"The article of the Penal Code provides for the punishment of the accused in cases of spreading false news and spreading rumors, imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year and a fine of not less than five thousand pounds and not more than twenty thousand pounds or one of these two penalties," said Mohammad Maher Hammadi.
Hammadi added that the article said that the sanctions include the publication of bad news, statements, false rumors, artificial papers, forged or falsely attributed to others, if this would disturb the public peace, cause panic among people or harm the interests the public.
