75 years old .. Detecting the remains of a US plane crashed in Japan in wartime
The identity of a pilot who led a US warplane, missing for nearly 75 years, was revealed after a diving trip by two researchers to reach the wreckage of a plane on a remote Japanese island called Aeromot Gemma.
Researchers Justin Tillan and Michael McClone visited the site of the wreckage and decided the plane was a model F4U-4 Corsair A bomber led by Second Lieutenant John McGrath, who has been listed as missing since he took part in the July 1945 attack during World War II, according to Life Science.
The war-time report noted that the MacGarath warplane failed to attack Japanese positions on the island of Iriomot after being hit by a missile attack that dropped it into the water.
So far, the remains of McGrath have not been identified, making him one of about 73,000 Americans "missing during World War II."
After completing the study, it was found that the story of the crashed American plane was known to some elders on the island.
