Why did the Pope choose to visit the Church of Abu Sirja on the day of the coming of Christ Egypt?
The Coptic Church of Abu Sarja was established in the late 4th and early 5th centuries. After the end of the persecution and the conversion of Rome to Christianity, the Roman army, which used to inhabit the fortress of Babylonians, erected a church above the archaeological cave on behalf of Saints with high status are the saints Sergius and Vachus, who were martyred in the Maximianus era (280-305).
The church is built in the basilica style and has an area of 27 × 17 m. The church floor is about 4 meters away from the outside street.
It is worth mentioning that the church was the seat of the Bishop of Egypt from the seventh to the twelfth century. The church has a special place in the history of the popes. Pope Abram VI of Zarah in 1963 and Pope Makarios II of 69 in 1102.
History recounts that the church was subjected to fire twice when Marwan II, the last of the Umayyad caliphs, burnt Fustat and was restored by Minister John Ibn Yusuf, known as Ibn al-Abah in 1073.
The second time was during the chaos that occurred in the last days of the Fatimid state and was rebuilt in 1171.
The church is full of 70 ancient icons dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a number of frescoes. The church contains the remains of the martyrs Sergius and Fuchs, and the body of the martyr, the monk, was discovered in Chnouna.
In the modern era, the church received a number of popes. In 1900, Pope Kyrillos the Fifth arrived at the opening of the Coptic Museum. Pope Cyril VI also visited the first two times during the celebration of the Babylonian churches in ancient Egypt and the second day of the feast of Christ's entry into the land of Egypt in 1976. The visit of His Holiness Pope Twadros II to her is today the third visit to his Holiness since he took over the throne on 18 November 2012.
As was mentioned in the year 2015 Abuna Matias I Patriarch of Ethiopia accompanied by a delegation from the Ethiopian Church.
