UEFA Announces Application of Video Technology in European League

World football

The European Union football federation (UEFA) said on Monday that it would use video-assisted refereeing technology at the Nations Cup finals in Portugal this week.

The technique was used at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and in the knockout stages of the Champions League this season, and will be used in the English premier league starting next season.

The continental union briefed the coaches of Portugal, England, Switzerland and the Netherlands on how to use the technique in April and England coach Gareth Southdiet welcomed it.

"There is no system that works at 100 percent, but it has succeeded in correcting major and clear errors. Overall, this system has finally made the right decisions," Southgate said.

The main criticism of this system is the time it takes to review the arbitral decisions, as well as the masses on the pitch do not know what is going on around them, while the referee reviews the return of the video on both sides of the stadium.

"This system has room for improvement," Dutch coach Ronald Koman said. "Helping video rule helps to make more fair decisions and correct most mistakes, which of course is good."

"But we all know that the debate will not stop because people interpret decisions in more ways than that," the Netherlands coach said. "I support the use of this technique to correct big and obvious errors instead of reviewing every possible mistake."

England will play Holland in the semi-finals of the League of Nations on June 6, a day after Portugal and Switzerland face another semi-final.
