"Yoga" works to improve health in the old age .. Learn details
Research has revealed that older adults who practice yoga are more likely to be mentally and physically better.
The study found that yoga improves physical function as well as mental health in healthy adults over the age of 60.
The physical benefits of yoga – an old practice involving orderly breathing and staying steady for long periods – have been found to enhance muscle strength, balance and flexibility.
The researchers also found that yoga promotes mental health, improves symptoms of depression, and the quality of sleep and vitality in older people.
To confirm the results of the study, the University's researchers reviewed 22 studies that investigated the effects of yoga on the physical and mental health of the elderly. The duration of the yoga programs ranged from one to seven months. The duration of sessions ranged from 30 to 90 minutes.
The researchers found that people who exercised yoga had improved balance, flexibility, leg strength, depression, sleep quality, vitality, and mental and physical health – compared to not exercising.
The benefits that yoga can provide for aging are great and also promote the physical activity of older people, the researchers said.
