Google shares "air quality" data with climate scientists .. Learn why

science and technology

In an effort to help with pollution tracking efforts, Google has revealed that it will share the "air quality" data it has collected from the Gulf region of California and the center of the valley through its virtual touring cars in the Project Air View project, with scientists to help them with their research.

According to the Gadgetsnow website, the data has been obtained over the past three years, including measurements taken after the forest fires in the Wayne County area and the agricultural areas of the Central Valley. Google began for the first time to supply its touring vehicles Air pollution sensors in Auckland in 2012 following a proposal by the Environmental Defense Fund.

The Internet-related air quality sensors detect gases from greenhouse gases, as well as particulate matter, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and more. The company already has similar projects in Houston, Salt Lake City, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and London.

By the end of 2019, the search engine giant plans to expand Project Air View to other continents including Asia, Africa and South America. In addition, the company plans to supply 50 other virtual navigation devices with air quality sensors by the end of the year. The full dataset is not publicly available, scientists have been asked to request access through a form.
