Irrigation participates in the 18th World Meteorological Congress in Geneva

Egyptian reports

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is participating in the 18th Conference of the World Meteorological Organization [WMO], held in Geneva from June 6 to 8.

The Ministry of Irrigation pointed to the obvious impact of climate change as a reality of many catastrophic events around the world. Natural disasters caused economic losses of 225 billion dollars worldwide in 2018. East Africa floods in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia, Djibouti and Burundi affected millions Egypt has also been hit by a severe heat wave of more than 45 degrees Celsius.

The Ministry of Irrigation stressed the need to take these phenomena seriously, adding that there is an urgent need to deal with climate change differently through new methods of further research and community participation.

In the water sector, the Ministry of Irrigation stressed that the water sector is currently facing many challenges around the world as the demand for freshwater is increasing significantly from all sectors of development competing for freshwater. In addition, pollution of water resources poses a serious threat to sustainable development. Climate change also poses additional challenges to water resource management, especially its impact on the hydrological system of river communities, causing droughts in some places and flooding elsewhere. Therefore, cooperation between meteorological, hydrological, environmental and disaster protection agencies Is necessary to ensure the successful planning and implementation of sustainable development policies.

In Africa there are many water centers with highly qualified experts and a partnership between FAO and water centers will contribute to the implementation of its program at the regional and national levels at the lowest cost, especially since Egypt has a long history of cooperation with the Nile Basin countries in various fields including capacity building Training programs, scholarships, academic and master plans for water resources. Cooperation also includes water resources development projects such as weed control projects, landing sites on rivers and lakes, drilling of groundwater wells in arid zones, Small to collect rainwater.

This is a confirmation of Egypt's policy that cooperation is the only way to manage transboundary rivers, realize the development aspirations of the Nile Basin countries and ensure water security for all.
